A variety of furniture – discarded finds – combine to create a setting that feels like a cozy home. It is an arrangement of stand-ins, painted black and marked with colorful letters. Yet, at second glance, this seemingly lifeless backdrop is filled with vitality, as the pieces of furniture tell their stories through integrated displays, accompanied by seemingly cheerful songs and animations. What do pieces of furniture experience? This work was created for the solo exhibition Platzhalter, which was on view at the AkademieGalerie in Munich from February 14 to February 19, 2023.
Related performances: The gallery is located in a subway mezzanine, enabling interaction with the passing subway crowd. Passers-by were drawn into the exhibition space through daily, rotating live performances featuring recurring characters from Hoffmann’s work.
